Mini Session vs Custom Session
When it comes to capturing your family’s special moments, choosing between a mini-session and a custom session can feel overwhelming. Both options offer unique benefits, but the right choice depends on your needs, schedule, and vision for your photos. Let’s break down the pros and cons of each, so you can decide which session is the best fit for your family!
What is a Mini Session?
A mini-session is a short, pre-planned photography session that typically lasts 20 minutes and includes a set number of digital images. These sessions are often held at a predetermined location and on specific dates.
Pros of Mini Sessions:
- Quick & Efficient – Perfect for families with young kids who may not have the patience for a longer session.
- Budget-Friendly – A great way to get professional photos at a lower cost.
- Seasonal Themes – Many mini sessions are designed around beautiful seasonal backdrops like sunflower or tulip fields, fall foliage, and holiday tree farms that you might not get booking a custom session
- Great for Updates – If you only need a few fresh photos, a mini-session is an excellent option.
Cons of Mini Sessions:
- Limited Time – The short session means less time for multiple poses, candid moments, or outfit changes. It also means that there are most likely people before and after you so if you are running behind, or shy children it can change the number of shots taken.
- Set Location & Date – Minis take place at a preselected location and date, so they may not offer the flexibility you need. Some locations are even rain or shine and can not be changed.
- Less Personalized – While mini-sessions capture beautiful moments, they may not allow for as much creativity or a relaxed, storytelling approach. We have a list of photos that we take which is about 15 minutes depending on families, there is not a lot of time to go off script.
What is a Custom Session?
A custom photography session is a full-length session (we have full and half) that allows for more flexibility in location, outfits, and creative direction. This is a fully personalized experience tailored to your family's unique story.
Pros of Custom Sessions:
- More Time – A relaxed pace allows for more variety in shots, candid moments, and natural interactions.
- Location of Your Choice – Whether it's the beach, a park, or your own backyard, you can choose a meaningful spot.
- Multiple Outfits – More time means you can change outfits to create diverse looks in one session.
- Best for Larger Families – If you have multiple children or want to include extended family, a custom session ensures everyone gets time in front of the camera.
- Storytelling Approach – Custom sessions allow for more creativity and a mix of posed and candid shots.
Cons of Custom Sessions:
- Higher Cost – The personalized experience and extra time come at a higher price.
- More Planning – Choosing outfits, coordinating schedules, and selecting a location may require more effort.
